QON Releases Mid-Year 2026 European Market Outlook: Resilience Requires Discipline
Boutique private asset management firm identifies selective opportunity amid elevated inflation, changing monetary conditions and widening valuation dispersion
Release Date: 1 July 2026
Vienna / Valletta – QON, the boutique private asset management and advisory firm based in Austria and Malta, has released its Mid-Year 2026 European Market Outlook, assessing a financial landscape that has proved more resilient than many expected, yet materially more complex than markets appeared to anticipate at the beginning of the year.
The first half of 2026 was shaped by abrupt energy repricing, renewed geopolitical uncertainty, shifting expectations for central-bank policy and a marked divergence between sectors, regions and individual companies. European risk assets have demonstrated considerable resilience, but QON believes that the second half of the year will reward selectivity, liquidity discipline and rigorous attention to underlying quality rather than broad market exposure alone.
“Resilience should not be mistaken for invulnerability,” said Michael de Bourbon, Chief Investment Officer at QON. “Markets have adapted impressively to a difficult first half, but the investment environment has become less forgiving. In the months ahead, the distinction between strong businesses and merely popular assets is likely to become more pronounced.”
The outlook notes that Europe enters July with a more demanding macroeconomic balance. Inflationary pressures have re-emerged through higher energy costs, while the growth outlook remains subdued. The European Central Bank’s recent decision to raise key interest rates underlines that the return to a more predictable monetary environment cannot yet be assumed.
Against this backdrop, QON identifies four principal themes for the remainder of 2026:
- Monetary policy and inflation: Interest-rate expectations will remain highly sensitive to energy prices, wage developments and evidence of broader price pressures. Investors should expect continued volatility in duration-sensitive assets and renewed differentiation across credit markets.
- European equities: strength with dispersion: European markets have recovered strongly, yet headline performance conceals a much wider divergence in earnings quality, balance-sheet resilience and valuation. QON sees the greatest opportunity in companies with durable pricing power, strategic relevance and credible cash-flow visibility.
- Strategic investment themes: The firm expects sustained capital deployment into energy security, defence, critical infrastructure, industrial modernisation, data capacity and selected applications of artificial intelligence. These themes are no longer merely cyclical opportunities; increasingly, they reflect Europe’s strategic response to a changing geopolitical and technological environment.
- Private markets and real assets: Private credit, infrastructure, selected secondaries and income-producing real assets continue to offer attractive opportunities for long-term capital. However, QON stresses that manager selection, covenant quality, refinancing risk and prudent structuring are now more important than ever.
QON further observes that the strategic case for Europe remains intact. A resilient labour market, continued public investment in infrastructure and security, and a growing emphasis on industrial autonomy provide important support beneath a more difficult short-term outlook. Yet slower external demand, energy-market uncertainty and the possibility of further policy tightening mean that investors should remain cautious about extrapolating recent market gains.
For private clients, family offices and internationally exposed investors, QON believes that portfolio construction must increasingly combine growth assets with liquidity reserves, robust income strategies, geographic diversification and carefully selected alternatives.
“The central question is no longer whether investors should be optimistic or defensive,” de Bourbon added. “It is whether portfolios are sufficiently deliberate. The strongest outcomes will come from disciplined allocation, careful underwriting and the willingness to distinguish long-term value from short-term momentum.”
As Europe moves into the second half of 2026, QON remains focused on protecting and growing client capital through active judgement, cross-border expertise and a long-term investment perspective grounded in discipline, discretion and strategic clarity.
